Ascension is a lump of volcanic rock rising over 3 km from the mid-South Atlantic Ocean floor to create an Island 11 km by 17. Located 8º south of the equator, we enjoy short & T-shirt weather all year round and enough rainfall on the central mountain area to support banana and citrus fruit. High cliffs to the south & eastern created by frequent battering of mid-ocean storms are a seasonal breading ground to tens of thousands of migratory birds and to the north & west, small white sandy beaches nestle between black craggy lava flows providing a world premier turtle breeding ground.
Ascension has no indigenous population; all 1,100 people here are either employees or dependants of VT Communications, connected with USAF/RAF Wideawake Airfield, Cable & Wireless or other communications organisations. Welfare facilities such as school and hospital are as far as possible to UK standards and we enjoy a number of good social establishments and sporting facilities which include three fresh water swimming pools.
Several very good sites which tell all about the Island, its people, geography and ham radio activity. No point in repeating here what has been written already!
